    THE ARTIST

    Banu Tulumen

Greetings from beautiful Summerland, in British Columbia, Canada!

I am a multifaceted abstract painter, illustrator, and writer, currently residing in Summerland, BC, Canada. Born in Istanbul, Türkiye, I had the unique opportunity to travel the world as the daughter of a career diplomat, which greatly influenced my exposure to diverse cultures and their vivid colours.

My career encompasses interior design, event planning, and creative writing. I authored and illustrated three children's books in English before venturing into painting as another form of creative expression. My artistic journey began with my first exhibition in 1976, where my children's book illustrations were showcased at the Turkish American Association Gallery in Ankara. In the early 1980s, my early paintings were displayed at the Sadberk Hanim Museum in Istanbul.

My creative output slowed due to motherhood and my event planning business, but upon immigrating to Canada in 2010, I reignited my passion for art. Over the past several years, I have cultivated a distinctive voice in interpretive abstraction, a form of abstract art that draws from personal experience, symbolism, and emotional resonance.

My work often blends fluid motion with intentional disruption — resin, texture, linework, and layers of acrylic converge to create forms that feel at once organic and imagined. There is often a sense of hidden presence: silhouettes, spectral figures, tree-like structures, drifting orbs, or creatures from mythology and memory. While non-literal, these elements suggest stories or emotional undercurrents — transformation, migration, loss, resilience, or quiet defiance.

The round and oval canvases I often choose are not accidental. They represent the dissolution of rigid boundaries — especially the historically enforced divide between private and public spheres, particularly in the lives of women. My paintings resist confinement and often carry layered meanings shaped by my lived experience as a Turkish immigrant woman, a creative spirit reclaiming her own voice.

I see painting as an act of both revelation and concealment — a balance between control and spontaneity. Each work begins intuitively, and then invites me to discover what is emerging. Sometimes it’s a forest of red silhouettes (The Red Forest), other times a glowing core that hints at myth (Dragon’s Egg), or a surreal fusion of marine life and imagination (The Neon Lobster). Viewers are invited to linger, question, and form their own interpretations — just as I do while creating.

Notable works include Dragona Jellyfish, featured in the Federation of Canadian Artists’ “On the Edge” exhibition at the Federation Gallery in Vancouver in 2023, and Celestial Impact, which was accepted into both Part Crowd Art Gallery's online show and "Experimental Intervention" at Propeller Art Gallery in Toronto, curated by Leisa Rich.

In 2024, my paintings Flabbergasted and Midnight Shadows were recognized in the FCA's “On the Edge” exhibition. Flabbergasted also appeared at Artifacts Projects Gallery in New York City in October 2024. My mixed media works Lovers' Lattice, Milky Way, Stellar Incandescence, Ethereal Presence, and Turmoil were featured in exhibitions across Toronto, including the Propeller Art Gallery and Part Crowd Art Gallery. Most recently, Silent Horizon is due to be exhibited at MEAM (Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona) between June 13–15, 2025.

In addition to my visual art, I published my first novel, Coincidences & Consequences, with FriesenPress in 2023.

I am currently the President of the Penticton & District Community Arts Council, which celebrates its 65th anniversary promoting the arts in our community.
